Wheel Talk x Rapha: The 2019 Kit

April 1, 2019

It’s been 3 years since we released a new kit. Not only have we been waiting for the right time but we have also been hunting for the right manufacturer to make the kits. Having worked with two companies previously we either had issues with high minimums or not exactly the quality we were expecting. We were looking for something that we felt would match the care we put into the brand. Luckily Rapha decided to step their toes into the custom game right at the same time we were relaunching the website and Wheel Talk brand. Being friends of the Rapha brand we were quickly put in touch with their lead creatives to see what we could come up with. After some emails and some toying around with their editing tool we were able to come up with a style that we were happy with. Also, knowing that it will get produced with Rapha quality leaves us with no worry that the finished product will be what we envisioned.

We hope y’all are as happy with this as we are. Pre-orders will be open all month with an 8 week lead time. All orders will be shipped priority mail once they arrive.

Happy riding everyone!

SPENCER SIEGRIST – AN INTRODUCTION AND THE STOKE FOR ALL THINGS DIRT / FIXED

March 31, 2019

What up fellow Riders! Spencer here, the newest contributor to Wheel Talk. I wanted to introduce myself, go over my love(s) for riding, and provide a scoop on what you can expect to see from me in what’s shaping up to be frickin’ awesome year for bike riding. So let’s get into it.

I’ve been riding bikes for well over 12 years now, with the past 9 years residing in San Francisco, California. I was fully convinced I’d be able to push my limits and grow as a rider after diving straight into a truly fast paced topographically-rich city. And… I was right.

My first bike love was (and remains in many ways) forged on the urban track bike. I specifically say ‘urban track’ because I am not a velodrome track racer or possess (much of any) traditional track hardware on my current fixed rig. I always found myself firmly split between doing tricks and charging down hills, slashing thru car traffic to be my own personal bread n’ butter.

CRANKSGIVING 2018

November 26, 2018

The yearly Turkey Trot. Every year Bryan Dempler, Tobi Whaley and I go on our Thanksgiving day ride before we sit down and feast for the evening. We’ve hit the same route for the last 3 years running, and I don’t think we should ever change it. It’s starting to feel like a tradition at this point. There’s strength in repetition, and it’s a fun challenge to try and shoot it differently every time.

With rains the days before and morning leading up to our launch, things were still pretty wet. Especially once we hit the not so dusty trail on our decent back into town. Every couple of feet we had to push out tacky clay that had begun to accumulate in our wheels and tight clearance points. We were all getting tired of having to find a new stick strong enough for the job, but after hopping a couple fences, dodging a few cows and b-lining across some fields, we finally made it back to the main road. Check out photos from other years HERE and we’ll see you next time.

WHEEL TALK ROAD – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TOBI WHALEY

November 17, 2018

Today is Tobi Whaley’s (@wheeltalkroad) birthday, so we pulled up some photos from when he came and visited us here in Portland last March. We road around downtown then made our way through Forest Park along the Leif Erickson Trail, and across the St. Johns Bridge. Tobi and I have had a lot of good times over the years, and both got into riding bikes at the same time. A decision that changed both of our lives and became a part of our lifestyle really quickly after. We have some big things planned and are excited to share them with everyone when the time comes. Until then enjoy these photos and “Happy Birthday Tobi”.

CRANKSGIVING 2017

January 7, 2018

I’m thankful for these two dudes. Every year, Tobi, Bryan & I take the train back home for the holidays, and every year we do a little turkey trot around the outskirts of town. It’s never too long. Something quick, under 30, but there’s usually a fence to be hopped or cow paddy to dodge along the way. Midway through the ride we’ll pull off and take a moment to soak in the scenery. Usually that means pulling off at the nearest drainage ditch to catch some quick airs before we continue on our journey. There are a ton of spots like this peppered around town, some of which have transitions that are smoother than most skateparks I’ve been to.

At one point I saw a hawk chowing down on a rattlesnake so I hopped off my bike, dropped down to its level and started shooting photos. I army crawled closer and got within an arm’s length before the hawk started to flex and didn’t want anything to do with me any longer. I always forget how sick Tobi’s Wheel Talk kit looks. We’re going to have to make a new one soon. Well, that’s it for this year. Check out more photos below, otherwise look forward to more next year.

RIDING GRAVEL WITH DUSTIN KLEIN – THE VIDEO

December 2, 2017

They told us to go kick rocks. So we did. The videos Dustin Klein has been making just keep getting better and better. It’s amazing how small and lightweight cameras have become. One minute it’s in your pocket the next it’s out and rolling. Perfect for on the bike, going the distance, no backpack type of rides. After seeing some stills in the post below, press play and take a look through Dustin’s lens.

DUSTIN KLEIN MADE ME DO IT

October 30, 2017

Yesterday I linked up with Dustin Klein and went on what I’ll describe as the wildest ride I’ve ever been on. We rode further. Climbed higher. I even wore a bib. Let’s just say it was a day packed full of firsts. Dustin was kind enough to set me up with THIS Ritchy mountain bike for the ride as well as water. Which I didn’t bring. Again, first timer over here.

We crossed over the St. Johns bridge and into the fog. DK lead the charge and pointed out the sights, narrating me through all the important details along the way. It’s always great having somebody local show you the hidden gems around town. I expected the scenery to be pretty amazing moving up to Portland but I never imagined it would look like this. The falling leaves and visual changing of the seasons is something we don’t have back home, and that Portland fully delivers on.

All in all, my “Strava” said we rode 62.7 Miles with 5,581 ft of climbing. Granted that factors in the Sandwich and fries I grabbed afterwards, but still. I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a lot for me, but I’m glad I had someone like Dustin around to hand down some pro tips. We’ll have to do more rides like this.

Getting Dirty With Valence Bicycles

December 1, 2016

Two weeks ago, while I was in California, I had the opportunity to test a ride from Valence Bicycles and chat with Shawn the brains behind it all.

From what I could tell on the internet it was a bike with race-like geometry that could accommodate 32mm tires and had disc brakes. I figured a typical “gravel grinder” but looks are deceiving, and the cover of a book rarely tells its story.
