I’m trying to figure out where to even begin with this one and I think it makes the most sense to explain what the term “Tarck” means. If you’ve been riding fixed gear for more than 5 or 6 years, you probably already know, but simply put it’s tricks on track bikes. It can be both something you do and used as a term to describe a type of bike. It’s what Fixed Gear Freestyle started out as and has been making a silent resurgence as of lately. Mike Schmitt & I met up in downtown San Francisco one gloomy afternoon and had a ton of fun filming for this one. He stripped out the threads on his rear wheel trying to foot plant 180 off the fire hydrant, but we didn’t let that stop us from having a good time. Be on the look out for more track bike videos like this peppered into the usual FGFS coverage.
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Those words couldn’t be more true as the 2016 Prickly Pear Jam in Arizona comes to a close. Huge shout out to everyone who showed up and an ever louder applause to Mike Schmitt for bringing everyone together. I’m looking forward to seeing where the next jam like this is going to take place. Day One and we’re already sun burnt. Everyone is beginning to trickle in for the Prickly Pear Jam Saturday. It’s been 100+ degrees each day we’ve been here and I’m already in the market for an endless amount of sun screen, a bigger hat, and a sweat towel. We’ve wasted no time in getting broken off and feeling like death at the end of the day. I’ve never surfed the ocean, but I have surfed a ton of couches in my day. Our good friend Leaf Chang did us one better and set Mike Schmitt & I up on an actual bed during the time we spent in New York last year. For those who don’t already know, Leaf designs most of the graphics for G.O.A.T, which has gotten a huge breath of life over the last few months during the release of their first track bike. I’m stoked to see how much hype they’ve created in the community with this project and can’t wait to see where they take it from here. Check out more photos below.
In honor of the release of Mike Schmitt’s latest edit I decided to post a bunch of studio shots I took of his signature part, the TURF Nightstick. At 4.9″ long these are the longest plastic pegs available on the market and were designed by MTS himself. The added length makes since for wider wheel diameters and give you more room to play with while remaining in contact with the grind. Another year is in the bag so we took a minute to reflect on 15 of the most memorable videos of 2015. It’s amazing to watch the progression that continues to happen year after year and I couldn’t be more stoked to be a part of it. Take a look below and see for yourself.
Commander in Chief at TURF Bikes, Mike Schmitt brought the heat in his Word Is Bond section and came through with some of the heaviest grind combos in the video. Mike has always been a huge part of the filming process and is the Starsky to my Hutch, Rocky to my Bullwinkle, or the Lilo to my Stitch if you will. It’s been tough getting by without him, but I’m on the road to recovery and am on the hunt for a new filming counterpart. I’m constantly blown away by the tricks he’s able to put together and the spots he manages to find. Which is why this is easily one of my favorite parts in the full length. For those of you who don’t already know, Mike T. Schmitt recently moved to the Grand Canyon State to live and ride in Tempe Arizona. A week before he made the journey out there, we linked up on our lunch break and grabbed a bite to eat. After chowing down on a couple burritos, I pulled out the camera and shot these two photos.
