This morning Mike Schmitt released the official recap of the Prickly Pear Jam that happened in Arizona a couple weeks ago. This 10 minute video is packed full of good times, vicious heat, and collective mix of familiar faces. My favorite part of the video and possibly the funniest part of the day was when Mike pulled a 180 crook in flip flops for a quick 20 bucks. At which point everyone came together and scrounged up enough to pay the debt. Shout out to Zane Meyer for all the arial coverage, and to Kai Yao for shooting secondary angles. That’s it folks, the 2016 Prickly Pear Jam in Arizona is officially a wrap. This has been one of the best FGFS events there has been in years and it’s something that will be remembered for a long time to come. The day before Michael Penrose drove back to his native land of Long Beach, I pulled his Bombtrack Dash out front of our house here in San Francisco and shot a couple quick photos of it. In memory of Michael Penrose’s now not so recent trip to SF, I decided scan through some of the photos we took and see if there were any shots time forgot. There were a few gems buried deep in the archives of Michael and Ian Walker keeping it mellow as we rode along The Bay one saturday afternoon. Michael stacked a bunch of clips for the Wheel Talk full length we’ve been working on and I’m real stoked he made the trip out here. Check out more photos from his stay below.
This is one of the spots in our neighborhood that we ride passed all the time but never stop to shoot. Michael Penrose and myself were about to do just that, when I decided to hit the breaks and circle back to catch a couple shots of him hopping into the alleyway. Filming with Penrose opened my eyes to the fact that we rarely shoot photos anymore. We’re constantly caught up in catching the clip before security comes through and gives us the boot. Now that we have multiple cameras on deck it’ll be easier having one devoted to shooting stills. Check out more photos below.
Mike Schmitt took Michael Penrose on a tour of some of the greener parts of San Francisco and filmed this one day edit of their excursion. I’ve been real stoked on all of the videos TURF has been putting out now that MTS has a camera of his own. Expect to see a lot more content coming out of the Bay Area, and keep your eyes peeled for Michael’s section in the upcoming Wheel Talk video.
For every spot they kill with caps or tear out completely, there’s another one that’s finishing up being built. The only trouble with that is riding it before they have a chance to realize what they’ve made and kill it with caps again. It’s a vicious cycle, but with all of the construction going on in SF, it’s easy to find something new. Being a part of the FGFS community is perhaps the best part about riding Fixed Gear Freestyle. The scene is so tightly knit that you don’t have to have met somebody to feel like you’re already best buds. It’s this small thing that we share in common that breaks the ice and bonds us all together. Nearly all of the friends I have at this point stem from biking in one way or another. When Michael Penrose hit me up asking if he could stay with us in SF, our response was an immediate yes. Having never met him before he stepped foot in our house, we felt as though we already knew him through watching him ride in videos and the most recent SMC Trip to Arizona // “Iced Out Arizona“.
